Our Guide to Style & Entertainment For March

March! Already, it only feels like last week we were watching fireworks as we entered 2018. As we enter March, a month typically associated with new beginnings, it seems only fitting to share some of our favourite things at the moment.

We’re excited to see Lady Bird

Having only come out a few days ago, Lady Bird has been hyped up for months and we cannot wait to finally watch it! Nominated for five different Oscars, it tells the tale of a relationship between a mother and daughter who are equally strong willed and stubborn. From the trailers the film seems aesthetically pleasing for those with an artistic eye and has an edge to it for those quirkier folk. Starring as Lady Bird is Irish actress Saoirse Ronan who is well known for her roles in films such as The Lovely Bones, Byzantium and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Boogie to No Hot Ashes

There are an uncountable number of talented bands in the UK’s up-and-coming scene, one of our favourites at the moment is Manchester based No Hot Ashes. They just released their latest single ‘Skint Kids Disco’. Their music is bringing back funk with a mix of contemporary indie rock. This band has a big future ahead of them and already has a large following. Remember, all your favourite bands started off somewhere, support your local music scene!

Brunch it up at Brew & Brownie

But whilst you’re there make sure you visit Brew & Brownie, it’s only a five minute walk away from the train station and has the best pancakes ever, with a wide selection of toppings and a thick stack you’ll struggle to conquer. Feel glamorous at home with our Gin & Prosecco Cocktail

Cocktails are all the rage, and who doesn’t love a fancy-looking cocktail to post on your Instagram and make all your friends jealous! On top of that, this isn’t just any cocktail, it’s a gin AND prosecco cocktail...oh go on! Well we’re going to give you our secret recipe to make your own super fancy cocktail at home!

What you’ll need:

  • Gin
  • Raspberries
  • Elder flower cordial (or liqueur)
  • Prosecco
  • Martini glass
  • Sieve
  • Cocktail spoon
How to make it:

  1. Put five raspberries into a glass (if you have a cocktail shaker than use that) and mash them up with the end of a rolling pin.
  2. Add in 50ml of gin (We recommend using Hendricks for this, but any will do)
  3. Add 25ml of your elderflower cordial or liqueur. If you’re using a shaker than give the thing a shake, if not, just mix it up a lot!
  4. Then you’ll need to pour it into your Martini glass through a sieve, so that you don’t get any raspberry bits in the drink.
  5. Now comes the tricky part. So far you should have a small red looking drinking. Now you’ll need your cocktail spoon and your prosecco. Hold the spoon diagonally above the red liquid so that the flat top end of the spoon is just hovering over the liquid; gently pour the prosecco down the ridged spoon. This should create a layered drink of your raspberry infused gin with a bubbling prosecco top. Then put a raspberry on the rim of the drink and you’re finished!

Mother's Day is nearly here, so why not invite your mum round and treat her to cocktails and a catch-up! She'll love it!

Peter Lavery’s Circus Exhibition

Photographer Peter Lavery has been photographing circuses for fifty years. He studied photography at the Royal College of Art in London, before he had even finished his studies he was travelling around in search of circuses. His fascination with the circus began in 1968 when he visited a small indoor circus in his home town Wakefield.

“I was immediately struck by the disparity between the outward exoticism, the finery, the sequinned costumes, the plumes, the elaborate display and back stage ordinariness. At once I was enthralled by the sounds and the smell, but I had no idea the subject would capture and hold my imagination for the best part of five decades”

Lavery’s circus photography is considered to be some of the most important examples of human and social documentation in Britain, and part of what make his work so unique is that it is all shot on a plate camera. (For you younger folks one of those really old looking cameras that you might see in a period drama, they were invented in the mid 1800s).

His exhibition is on at The Harley Gallery until the 15th March as part of the Circus250 celebrations. It’s free entry to see his beautiful work.
